Massive demonstration against military coup in Khartoum, Sudan
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Sudan yesterday (October 30) to protest against the military coup led by the leader Gen Abdel Fattah Burhan, that took place five days ago.
Protesters descended on the capital, Khartoum, demanding the restoration of a civilian-led government.
The clip shows men, women, and children marching across the streets while waving Sudanese flags, chanting, and clapping their hands.
Three people were shot dead during yesterday's protests.
The video features four interviews with demonstrators who joined the nationwide protest against the military coup.
Vox-pops:
1. Ghazi Al-Rayah:
"The Sudanese people have come out today, rejecting the coup and the dictatorship. We went out to demonstrate peacefully and ended the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir. Currently, the army commander, Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, exercises the same authority during al-Bashir’s and is trying to incite violence across Sudan through repression and killings. We will not go through the dictatorial rule again!
We have come out today, demanding civil rule, freedom, democracy, and the right to have a civilian president"
2. Magda Magai:
"We want a civilian government without political parties. We have joined the protest for our children's future to live in freedom and peace".
3. Naji Mahjoub:
"We are here to send a strong message to the ruling military council and the army commander: these people will not give up civilian rule. That was stated in the constitutional agreement, which stipulates that the army is a partner in the transitional period. Today we demand a partnership with the army, but the army must replace the current leaders because they are killing protesters".
4. Mohamed Nyala:
Today, the Sudanese people have said their word in this millionth demonstration and expressed their rejection of the military coup. The Sudanese have come out today in all cities, rejecting the coup and the beginning of the third wave of the Sudanese revolution, which began in 2018, confirming that civilian rule is the right choice for the Sudanese people".
