An 18-year-old boy has survived after being impaled by two 40-foot iron rods in a bizarre accident.

The teenager was involved in an incident involving a cart loaded with iron rods, and was subsequently pierced in the right side of his chest.

He was taken to Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, in the state of Haryana, northern India.

Under the guidance of cardiac surgeon Dr SS Lohchab, he underwent a five-hour surgery to remove the rods.

In a video taken in hospital, the young man can be seen sitting up on the bed with the two rods protruding from his chest.

The metal bars can be seen all the way through his back, where doctors filed them down.

Incredibly, the patient appears to be calm while looking down at his injuries.

The surgery was successful and the patient is recovering after the strange incident.

Dr Lohchab said: “There was an accident between the boy and a cart loaded with iron roads and 40-feet long iron rod was pierced in the chest.

“When the patient was brought to the PGIMS, no X-ray or CT scan was feasible as the patient could not lie down with iron rods.

“The 40-feet long iron rod was cut by the locals. He was instantly taken to the operation theater where the operation lasted for 5 hours.

“The patient is alright after the operation and his respiratory system is working fine.”

Dr Lohchab was assisted by Dr Sandeep Singh, Dr Frankleena, Professor Naveen Malhotra and Dr Indra Malik during the surgery.
