Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, arrived at the Edgemead Community Hall in Cape Town with his wife, Carla, to cast his vote in 2021 local government elections.

According to recent polls the DA is set to retain power in Cape Town, albeit with a reduced majority. Under former mayoral candidate, Patricia De Lille, the party won more than two-thirds majority in the 2016 elections.

De Lille went on to form the GOOD Party with disgruntled former DA councillors after she resigned from the DA. Brett Herron, who served on De Lille’s mayoral committee, is running against Hill-Lewis as GOOD’s mayoral candidate.

Hill-Lewis will take over from Dan Plato, who served as mayor of Cape Town after De Lille resigned. Smaller parties are expected to make inroads into the DA’s traditional strongholds.
