South Africa’s three biggest political parties, the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) responded to the extremely lower voter turnout of 35% in the country’s 2021 local government elections on November 1.

Cameron Dugmore from the ANC said the weather was the main factor that affected voter turnout. Rainfall battered the Cape Town Metro area for most of Election Day.

The DA got off to a rocky start according to the party’s Carl Pophaim but he is optimistic that everyone who intended to vote was able to vote.

The EFF’s Veronica Mente took issue with the IEC’s (Independent Electoral Commission) state of readiness.
