Bobtail Lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) are large, slow-moving, blue-tongued skinks found only in Australia. There are several forms that occur across southern Australia, and they are known by a variety of names including Shingleback, Sleepy Lizard, Pinecone Lizard and others. They have short stumpy tails that resemble the head and heavily armoured bodies, and gape when threatened, hissing and displaying their blue tongues and pink mouths. If pressed, Bobtails can deliver a powerful bite with their strong jaws and peg-like teeth. Bobtails are omnivores and eat a variety of foods including fruits, snails, large insects and even pet food. Bobtail Lizards are often seen basking on roads, and many are killed by inattentive drivers. This large Bobtail was basking on a gravel road in Stirling Range National Park. It allowed us to approach closely before gaping and hissing before it moved away.
