Hundreds of shipping containers are being stored on farmland as driver shortages continue to cause problems at Britain's biggest freight port in the run-up to Christmas.

A giant steel mountain has appeared off the A140 near Eye, Cambs, which is just 26 miles from the port of Felixstowe, Suffolk.

Earlier this year container ships were forced to divert from the port due to lack of drivers and labour shortages which hampered efforts to unload and reload ships.

This week the container mountain began to grow at the inland site although the reasons for its appearance were not clear.

It is possible that hauliers find storing empty containers cheaper outside ports, or there is limited capacity ahead of Christmas.

Felixstowe Port said it doesn't know anything about the metal mountain, as shipping companies and hauliers aren't under any obligation to tell the port about their container arrangements.

Car and commercial vehicle dealer Roy Humphreys confirmed the shipping containers were on its land and not owned by them, but they did not want to comment further.
