This Azara's night monkey (Aotus azarae), also known as Southern Night Monkey, is one of the many victims of wildlife trafficking and was lucky enough to be rescued and taken to a wildlife refuge, where it will, unfortunately, have to spend the rest of its life.

There are ten other species of Night Monkeys: the Gray-bellied Night Monkey (Aotus lemurinus), the Panamanian Night Monkey (Aotus zonalis), the Gray-handed Night Monkey (Aotus griseimembra), the Hernández-Camacho's Night Monkey (Aotus jorgehernandezi), the Brumback's Night Monkey (Aotus brumbacki), the Three-striped Night Monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), the Spix's Night Monkey (Aotus vociferans), the Peruvian Night Monkey (Aotus miconax), the Nancy Ma's Night Monkey (Aotus nancymai), and the Black-headed Night Monkey (Aotus nigriceps), which are split into Gray-necked and Red-necked, with seven and four species, respectively.
The Azara's Night Monkey species is split into three subspecies: Aotus azarae azarae, Aotus azarae boliviensis, and Aotus azarae infulatus.
The Azara's Night Monkey is a primate species endemic to South America, which means that it can be found nowhere else in the world, from northern Argentina, to Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and southern Peru. It occurs in primary and secondary forest, seasonally flooded and terra firma lowland forest, dry, semi deciduous forest patches and gallery forest.
As the name suggests, Night Monkeys are generally nocturnal animals, being most active at dawn and dusk, except for the Aotus azarae azarae subspecies, which can be active at any time of night or day. The Night Monkey is the only nocturnal primate in the Neotropics.
