BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 2, 2021: Shahana Hanif thanked supporters after she was projected to win her race for New York City Council in Brooklyn’s 39th District, becoming the first Muslim woman elected to the city’s legislature. Hanif, who is Bangladeshi American and ran on ballot lines for the Democratic and Working Families parties, was introduced by Brad Lander, the Council Member she will replace, who was projected to win his bid for New York City Comptroller. Hanif and Shekar Krishnan, who won a Council seat representing two Queens neighborhoods, will be the first-ever Council Members of South Asian descent.
