This gloomy place is called the Skeleton Coast. A lifeless stretch of the Namib desert, abutting directly into the raging Atlantic Ocean.
The length of this mysterious and mysterious piece of land in Namibia is a little more than 1000 km and it stretches from the Swakop River near Walvis Bay to the Kuene River, which is on the border with Angola. And it is also a place where for hundreds of years, a great many ships have been wrecked and their remains still rest in these lifeless sands.
The fact is that the cold Antarctic Bengel current reaches here from the southern latitudes of the Atlantic. Not only do the cold waters of the current form the most powerful coastal surf, but the cooled ocean air collides here with the winds, which on the contrary carry their red-hot forty-degree air from the Namib desert towards the ocean.
As a result of the collision of cold and hot streams, very low and thick fogs are formed along the coastline, hundreds of kilometers long.Ships in such conditions lose their orientation and are thrown ashore in conditions of poor visibility, as it was, for example, in 1909 with the steamer Eduard Bohlen.
