This is the heartwarming moment five newborn puppies were rescued after getting stuck in a muddy pit during heavy rain in Thailand.

The litter was found holed up under some logs and soaking in dirty water after a storm downpour had lashed Chonburi province on October 31.

Dog owner Kantana Winothapon said her pregnant pet, named Dum, had disappeared from home and returned after apparently having given birth.

Since the puppies were nowhere to be found, Kantana and her boyfriend searched through the area but found no sign of the pups.

The dogs’ cries were finally heard when the rain started to pour down. The couple followed the sound and found the five puppies on their property, covered in the mud under large pieces of wood.

They lifted up the pooches one by one and placed them in a basket to bring home. Kantana said that they have already received adoption offers from their neighbours.

She said: ‘I’m glad we found the puppies before the pit was filled with rainwater. They could have easily drowned down there. We will take care of them now.’

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines are at the peak of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until late November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
