Hyrax are small animals very similar to marmots, and when the hyrax were discovered, they were initially mistaken for rodents. After some time, having paid attention to the peculiarities of the structure of their limbs, the damans were classified as ungulates, and in the middle of the XIX century, having discovered the similarity of damans with elephants, they were allocated to an independent detachment. The similarity of damans with ungulates and elephants is explained by the presence of distant common ancestors of all these animals — the oldest primitive ungulates, from which all modern ungulates descended.
