Toxic foam floated down the Yamuna River in New Delhi today (November 8) as devotees prepared to bathe in the sacred water source.

Huge areas of white foam drifted through the Kalindi Kunj area of the city at around 9 am local time.

The foam is believed to have been caused by high levels of industrial pollutants including ammonia and phosphates.

Devotees could be seen in the footage preparing to take a dip in the toxic waters - an ancient ritual at the start of the Chatth festival.

Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi was also a cause for alarm after a huge number of fireworks were let off for Diwali and a recent spike in stubble burning.
