Mysterious sea creature wriggles on palm of scientist in Oregon
A mysterious sea creature was filmed wriggling on the palm of a scientist in Oregon.
Zooplanktologist Alejandro Damian-Serrano identified the strange, multi-legged creature as a Cystisoma. Footage shows the Cystisoma flailing in Alejandro’s palm, with its vibrant orange eye cells contrasting with its clear body.
These strange-looking animals are classified as hyperiid amphipods, a suborder of marine crustaceans.
They commonly live between 30 to 1,000 feet below the ocean. Growing up to seven inches long, their transparent body helps them hide from predators in open waters.
