Police fired tear gas at protesters decrying the government’s reopening of a landfill which was closed last September after public pressure in Tunisia.

Video shows demonstrators fleeing from canisters of tear gas fired by security officers to disperse the rally in coastal Agareb town, Sfax on November 8.

One man reportedly died of asphyxia at the hospital after inhaling the tear gas.

Residents had earlier complained that the rubbish dump was an environmental hazard and source of disease, prompting government officials to shut it down. Weeks of protests followed after city councils allegedly refused to collect trash in the region.
