A layer of toxic foam, a mixture of sewage and industrial waste that contains a large amount of ammonia and phosphates, created a white foam covering parts of the Yamuna River. Experts said that the foam could result in respiratory and skin problems.

The Delhi government deployed 15 boats to remove it as Chhath Puja devotees were reported to bathe and pray in the dangerous river.
