An Adélie penguin has swum to the shores of New Zealand, at least 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) from its natural habitat of Antarctica.

The lost penguin has caught the attention of locals who've named it Pingu.

It is only the third recorded incident of this species being found in New Zealand.

Harry Singh filmed this exclusive video when he and his wife came across the penguin while out walking on Birdlings Flat, a settlement south of the city of Christchurch on November 10.

Singh called penguin rescuers as he was concerned that the penguin was not getting into the water and might be attacked by other animals.

Rescuers were stunned to find the penguin was an Adélie.

Tests revealed that it was underweight and dehydrated and it has since been given fluids and fed via a feeding tube.

Rescuers said Pingu will be released onto a safe beach on Banks Peninsula.

"This beautiful Adelie penguin came all the way from Antarctica," Singh told Newsflare.

"He has been rescued by the penguin rescue team," he added.
