A savvy mum has transformed her home into a colourful paradise for just £4,000 by using duct tape – but her colour-blind husband can’t tell the difference.
Natasha McBrinn, 30, a family support worker from Ormskirk, Lancashire, lives with her husband Chris, 34 and her two children, Anthony, 14 and nine-month-old Franklyn.
Natasha decided to get creative and spruce up the home which she has been renting from a family friend since 2009.
But while a simple lick of paint or a small pop of colour would be on the cards for most, the rainbow-loving mum decided to go big with the transformation, giving every room an overhaul with brightly coloured walls and funky decor.
“Every room comes from an idea I have – sometimes it may just be a tiny idea and I expand on it from there," Natasha told Jam Press.
“Basically, my house is my canvas and I paint on a large scale.
“All the murals in the house are hand painted and designed by me from an idea in my head and I just go with it.”
She revamped her son's bedroom by using paint and wallpaper to create a strong contrast of bright red and black, which is broken up by faint squiggles over the walls.
Natasha layered short strips of colourful duct tape on the stairs to create a pop of brightness, which were accented with splodges of similar toned paint on the adjacent wall.
In the bathroom, she used spray paint on the appliances and on the walls to create a tie-dye effect, as well as dotting small strips of duct tape around to add sharp bursts of colour.
In total, Natasha estimates she has spent £4,200 transforming her home into the multi-coloured paradise, with her living room being the most expensive due to the couch which cost £2,000.
However, as she has had many materials gifted, she guesses this cost could have been a lot higher.
Natasha said: “For our master bedroom, it was a combination of tester pots, cheapy spray paint and vinyl.
“Our pallets for the bed were free and in my teenager’s bedroom, the paint and wallpaper were gifted.
“I upcycled all the original items [in the bathroom] with spray paint and I also upcycled the bath panel using duct tape.
“Everything has been bought on a very strict budget and most furniture comes from eBay, recycling centres, or for free from Facebook Marketplace or neighbours.”
Natasha’s go-to methods for transforming a home into a bright space are utilising tape and paint.
She uses tape to add texture, followed by paint to add a pop of colour to the room, or to make her plain furniture stand out by using tester pots or spray paint.
While her husband loves her artistry, he and their son, Anthony, are colour-blind – meaning Natasha’s visions come out looking totally different to them.
Natasha said: “My husband loves what I do – basically when I start a project, he just says ‘you do you’ and lets me go into the zone and create what I like.
“Before I actually decorate, he never fully understands my vision as he and Anthony are colour-blind."
Her favourite room is the downstairs toilet, which cost her less than £50 to transform.
She said: “I absolutely love the vibe in the toilet, it’s so out there and contrasting to what anyone else would have.
"I was sent a lot of the materials used to do the decorating for free due to my Instagram following.
“I’m actually planning on doing something similar in the living room soon.”
As Natasha has 39,000 followers on Instagram, she gets stopped in her local pub by people who comment on how amazing her house is.
Guests of their home also love her unique style – though she has received some negative comments online.
She added: “Obviously I know it’s not to everyone’s taste or style and I know that what I do is difficult to achieve or live with for most.
“But if we all did the same thing in our homes, then the world would be a bit boring.”
In a photo of her colourful kitchen uploaded to Instagram, which features crazy patterned carpets and bright blue units, many took to the comments to express their love for the home.
One person commented: “Honestly every time I see your house in my feed it just blows my mind!! So f-ing cool.”
Another viewer added: “A riot of colours! We love it.”
On another photo, which features her downstairs toilet that has ‘YAS QWEEN’ on the colourful paintball-like door, one person said: “Great shot Tasha, I love this wall.”
“Stunning,” added another follower.
In a post about her staircase, which is decorated using colourful duct tape and splodges of paint, one person said: “This is so cool!!!”
“Incredible steps,” another follower commented.
Other rooms feature the nursery, which is covered in bright yellow and blue pictures of lions, balloon dogs and other animated animals and her son’s room, which is toned-down from the rest of the house and features black squiggles and red accent features.
Natasha’s advice to anyone looking to decorate on a budget is to think outside the box and use what you already have, such as leftover spray paint or vinyl and to always take advantage of tester pots, as they save a fortune.
