Despite a court ban on the event, Polish far-right groups held an Independence Day march in Warsaw on Thursday 11 November.

The event has previously turned violent and before the march the capital's mayor said it would be unlawful, after the city won two court cases to deny it registration.

But the central government -- led by Poland's ultraconservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) -- gave its own approval when the head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression said he had given the march formal status, which he said allowed it to go ahead.
