A protest against pension reform in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo turned chaotic on Wednesday (November 10) when some demonstrators tried to break into the city council building.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who responded with rocks and glass bottles.

Several protesters were injured in the clashes, according to local media.

The new municipal law means that around 63,000 retirees who earn more than the minimum wage will start to contribute to local social security at a rate of 14 per cent.

A protest against the Municipal Pension Reform in the city of São Paulo ended up in confusion after some of those present tried to invade the City Council. They were dispersed with tear gas and rubber bullets, protesters threw bones, rocks, glass bottles and also set fire to garbage in the streets. Protesters were injured by rubber bullets and tear gas bombs.
The bill to amend the Organic Law (PLO) received 37 votes in favor and 18 against. Servers mourn the loss. The law provides that around 63,000 retirees who earn more than the minimum wage (R$ 1,100) will start to contribute to the municipal social security at a rate of 14%.
