Landslide crashes down hillside in front of cars in Indonesia
This is the scary moment a car a landslide crashed down a hillside in front of cars after several days of heavy rain in Indonesia.
The incident occurred on the main route connecting Palu and Parigi cities in Central Sulawesi province, Thursday, November 11.
Large stones rolled from the top of the hill to cover the access road. Several tree trunks were also carried away by this dangerous landslide.
Shocked driver Wiwi Susanti said he quickly started reversing when the earth tumbled down and uprooted trees.
He said: ‘The landslide happened right in front of our car. It was really terrible. We immediately turned back. We were afraid things would happen that we didn’t want.’
The incident happened after several days of heavy rain had lashed the area, causing the earth on the hillside to weaken.
The road also passes between the steep cliffs, making it prone to landslides, especially if in the rainy season.
Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand are at the peak of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until late November.
Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
Many of the under-developed nations struggle to cope with the heavy rain due to under-investment infrastructure.
