Human and wild boars might end their peaceful coexistence in Hong Kong under new culling policy

This video filmed in October 2020 shows a little girl photographing a baby wild boar in a forest near Wong Tai Sin. Wild boars in this area have been relatively calm until earlier in 2021, a series of incidents started with boars acting aggressively towards humans when searching for food.

A decision was made to use dart guns and euthanise wild boars after one individual bit the leg of a policeman who cornered him in a parking. The boar met his demise jumping from the roof of the parking. Whereas authorities had been pretty much indifferent to the straying of wild boars in urban areas, the attack on a policeman was the legendary straw that broke the donkey’s back. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation department initiated a culling program, luring boars with food to put them down. This probably means that peaceful scenes of close meetings between boars and humans are bound to end.
