OH HALO! PHOTOGRAPHER LIGHTS UP GLASTONBURY TOR WITH MAGNIFICENT HALO THAT COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR A UFO LANDING
A photographer has painted a spectacular light halo around the ancient landmark Glastonbury Tor in a spectacle that could be mistaken for a UFO sighting.
Will Ferguson, 28, used a drone to draw the illuminated ring above the atmospheric ‘magic mountain’.
The effect creates a bright light around St Michael’s Tower which sits atop the Tor in Somerset, an Iron Age settlement dating back to 300-200BC.
It streaks through the black night sky, which is peppered with stars, creating an eerie effect in keeping with the mythical history of the National Trust site.
Will scoped out the Tor in the day, before revisiting the site after darkness fell to capture the eerie images.
He fitted the drone with extremely bright lights before using it to circle the ancient stone structure, balancing the shutter speed settings with how fast it flew.
“I love this method of photography because I am creating something that people can only witness from a long exposure photograph,” said Will, who lives in London.
“I think this is why I am drawn to the magic of light painting.
“The most important aspect of taking these images at night is safety. It is legal in the UK to fly a drone at night within the Civil Aviation Authority laws, but I always do a pre-flight check of the location in daytime to ensure there aren’t any hazards such as electrical pylon wires or tree branches that I wouldn’t notice in the dark.”
Glastonbury Tor is one of the most famous landmarks in Somerset and is associated with spirituality and mysticism, and most notably the legend of King Arthur.
In Athurian mythology, the Tor is linked with the Isle of Avalon where the king was said to have been buried after his death.
