Woman creates incredible glow-in-the-dark makeup looks using UV paint
A woman has created stunning glow-in-the-dark makeup looks using just UV paint and ring lights – and they can take her up to 24 hours to complete.
Rita Sharma, 27, a nursing student from Norway, started experimenting with makeup when she was a teenager and has gone on to create some spectacular looks that include glow-in-the-dark masterpieces.
She studied art in high school and had a passion for drawing but then moved her artwork from paper onto her face.
After continuous practising, Rita realised that she had a special talent for creating detailed and intricate looks.
She decided to experiment with glow-in-the-dark makeup after she had a mishap with her broken ring light when trying to take a picture of one of her looks which featured a turtle.
“I was about to take photos when my ring light broke. I had a softbox as well, but the light was too dim and I didn’t like the look of it,” Rita said.
“I played around with the softbox light and ended up cutting holes in a black piece of fabric and placing it on the light - as a result, some parts of my face lit up.
“I really liked that effect, so I bought UV paint and light, which I started experimenting with."
As a teenager, she suffered from anorexia and bulimia - but her passion for glam and creative make-up gave her an outlet to help her cope during this time.
She said: "I understood I had a problem with food when I was around 13.
"When I was around 16, my brother told me I looked pale and had lost weight and he was concerned, at that point.
"My family found out I was throwing up and eating little. We talked a lot about it and we agreed that I would eat dinner with them every day.
"I also just started with makeup and that took a lot of my attention away from my anorexia. It was a combination of a lot of things that helped me get better, but my family and makeup were the biggest factors.
“I sat down playing around with makeup and felt all of my worries and mental stress fade away.
“It was a way for me to disconnect from the ‘real’ world full of exhausting eating-related problems and routines.
“I felt like I mastered something as well as feeling more confident and make-up helped me find myself again after years of being lost.”
Now she shares her stunning looks on Instagram and has been overwhelmed by the reaction from her 93,700 followers.
She draws on her own background to give her ideas for the looks.
She said: “I grew up surrounded by Indian art and beautiful Norwegian nature, as my dad is from India and my mother is from Norway.
“I usually combine these two things in my makeup looks and that’s where I find most of my inspiration.”
Rita can spend anywhere from two hours to 12 hours on planning and setting up her look, with a further hour to 12 hours creating the look itself.
One of her favourites features a dreamy night sky, while another shows a glowing aquarium filled with aquatic life.
Others include purple lightning bolts from her eyes, a cat looking out of a bright window and angels peering over fluffy clouds.
Her looks have even helped her win awards - in 2017, she entered the Nordic Face Awards and landed herself a position in the top five and she then went on to win in 2018.
One included a blue lion with gold accent features and another featured an elephant walking along some water, with a religious temple placed in the background.
She said: “I did three looks; one inspired by Norway, one by India and then the final one represented both to show what I come from and how it has shaped me into who I am today.
"I also started using my chest as a canvas, which gave me more room to create.
“In 2018, I won the awards and I was very happy and overwhelmed."
Although she loves putting together her creative makeup looks, Rita has had a few which have caused her some issues.
One of Rita’s most difficult looks included an elephant on her chest, with red, blue and purple splatters on either side, which were copied on her eyelids.
Rita said: “A lot of my looks have been super challenging - especially my entry look for the 2018 Nordic Face Awards.
"I did it three times before feeling satisfied with the look.
“Although, I really love my glow-in-the-dark looks that feature animals, with my favourite being the first one I did with the turtle.”
As she’s currently in her last year of studying to be a nurse, she’s had to set makeup to the side to focus on her studies - but it is excited for the future of her make-up hobby.
She added: “I feel like my creativity keeps evolving and I’ll probably develop and change my makeup style with time.
“My platform is a place where I share my love for art and I really hope that it will continue like that.
“I know it’s a bit scary at first, especially when posting on social media, but do it for yourself if that’s something that makes you happy.
“It’s okay to fail - just try again, as practice really makes perfect.”
