This is the surreal moment a heavy fog covered a city in northeastern China.

The city of Fuxin in Liaoning province was shrouded by the ‘sea of clouds’ on November 18 morning. Video shows the sun shining brightly across the hazy landscape, with only the tops of tall skyscrapers visible.

The Fuxin Meteorological Observatory issued a red warning for dense fog on November 17, forecasting poor visibility to persist until November 18 morning.

US-based research firm Rhodium Group said China, which uses coal as its main power source, contributed 27% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions last 2019. Despite the country being plagued by poor air quality and heavy pollution, it has increased coal production in recent weeks to avert a looming power crisis as winter comes.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to achieve carbon neutrality in China before 2060.
