This is the startling scene in West Sumatra, Indonesia as 1.8 tons of medicine, including HIV-AIDS drugs and vaccines were destroyed due to the expiration of the medicine itself.

The Covid vaccine was not among the medicine destroyed but other vaccines, such as for Rubella, were among the nearly 4,000 kilograms of expired drugs destroyed on November 22.

Nearly 5 billion rupiahs, or over $350,000 in US dollars, worth of medicine were destroyed.

More than 1.8 Tons of Medicines, consisting of HIV-AIDS drugs and Rubella Vaccines were destroyed in the Province of West Sumatra, Indonesia. These drugs had to be destroyed because their distribution period had expired or had expired. The Covid-19 vaccine has not been destroyed, because it is still being counted.

The extermination of the drugs, which have expired, takes place in the yard of the West Sumatra provincial health office. Destruction is done by grinding the drug using heavy equipment.

The drugs destroyed were almost two tons, with a value of five billion rupiah. The drugs that were destroyed were drugs that were part of the Indonesian government's program for people with HIV-AIDS/, filariasis or elephantiasis and the rubella vaccine that had expired.


Arry Yuswandi, Head of the West Sumatra Provincial Health Office, said that there was no COVID-19 vaccine in the list of destroyed drugs, because they were still being counted. He said that some of the Covid vaccines had expired, because they had not yet been injected, especially for vaccines that were sent far to remote areas.
