Dramatic footage has emerged from Hackney, east London, UK of a man being tasered after a standoff with police.

The video, captured on Saturday, shows the moment the man was shot with the stun gun after officers tried to subdue him using CS spray - having nearly no impact - and batons.

The man can be seen clutching an object, reported to be a "metal implement", as police try to restrain him while dodging out of the way of the weapon. After he is tasered and drops to the floor he can be seen being bundled into a police van while shouting to the watching crowd.

The filmer, a local resident, later wrote online: "Before I started filming, the man and the police ran out of a nearby garden in a housing estate, the man brandishing a weapon and shouting, while other police came up from the road shouting "put it down" or "put the weapon down" at least 10 times.

"According to the police, they were earlier flagged down and told a man was trying to break in to a nearby house. They challenged the man, who then jumped down from a first-floor window and ran away. After a short foot chase the man turned on officers armed with a metal implement."

The Hackney borough police wrote on Twitter: "Without Taser, this could have ended very differently. As it is, everybody lived to tell the tale."

The 26-year-old suspect was reportedly taken to hospital before being discharged and arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and attempted murder.
