A Thai island was hit with flash floods after heavy rain and storms.

Weather footage shows the torrents of muddy water sweeping through the streets of Phi Phi island in Krabi province, southern Thailand, after continuous rainstorms on November 18.

Locals captured the moment the deluge battered their homes, resorts, bungalows, and shops before flowing to the sea.

Holidaymakers and residents were forced to flee to higher grounds for safety. No deaths have been reported as the situation returned to normal on the same day.

A local said: ‘This happens whenever there’s a long and heavy rain, but the flood never lasts long as the water would just flow from the top and straight down to the sea.’

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are nearing the end of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which last until late November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.

Many of the under-developed nations struggle to cope with the heavy rain due to under-investment infrastructure.
