Pumice stones and ash spewed by a volcano covered a beach and turned its waters muddy in the Philippines.

Video shows volcanic debris washing up on the shore of Batanes province on November 23.

Resident Pat Rizia said: ‘Our beach sand was white originally, so for us living here, it’s very alarming to see it like that.’

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has identified the material as pumice and volcanic ash extruded from the Fukutoku-Okanoba Submarine Volcano in Japan on August 13. The volcano is over 2,000 kilometres northeast of the Philippine province.

PHIVOLCS warned that the debris can be cause damage to marine vehicles and sea creatures. The agency advised local government units to coordinate with the Philippine Coast Guard to use spill booms and other containment equipment to minimise water contamination.
