German police clash with Kurdish protesters at march for PKK leader's freedom
Scuffles broke out between German police officers and Kurdish protesters at a Lift the PKK Ban march in Berlin on Saturday (November 27).
Video shows flares being lit and police dressed in riot gear in a scuffle with pro-Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) protesters in the Kreuzberg district.
Those taking part in the march demanded the release of PKK leader and founder Abdullah Ocalan and held signs that said “Erdogan, terrorist,” in reference to longtime Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The march took place on the anniversary of the PKK being banned In Germany, on November 26, 1993. The group is designated as a terror organisation in Germany, which means any relation such as flags and banners referencing the group are illegal.
The protesters marched to show their opposition to the ban of the party and call for its legal status to be changed.
The clashes broke out with police as the rally reached its end point in Kreuzberg.
