Boats sail in Chennai streets after record rain brings Chennai to a standstill

Chennai has recorded 1000mm of rain in a month for the fourth time for any month and the third time in November in 200 years. Till now, the capital city of Tamilnadu has received 100 cm of rainfall in November, and the experts say that the record rainfall has taken place only for the third time in 100 years. About 75 percent showers above normal.

Due to the heavy rains around 400 areas are flooded in Chennai alone and many have been shifted to shelter homes. Those who are still living in their homes are reaching their homes only through the boats. Several areas in Chennai continued to receive rain on Sunday leaving many areas flooded after the capital city of Tamil Nadu witnessed rainfall overnight, prompting authorities to issue warnings and evacuate people from low-lying areas.

At least eight people were killed while 12000 others shifted to relief centers after heavy rains lashed Tamil Nadu since Thursday.
