Heartwarming footage shows a dog guiding his blind best friend through a supermarket in the Philippines.
Golden retriever-mix "Ginger" began to lead rescue dog "Kimchi" around when the latter turned blind in 2015, according to their owners Eric and Thea.
It was the natural thing to do, they say, as the two dogs had been best friends for years.
The duo captured the imagination of the public and the inspiring pair started visiting schools, companies and government agencies as part of an education programme.
Unfortunately, Ginger died in 2019 from a heart attack but his owners say Kimchi is carrying on his legacy and continuing to bring joy to people's lives via the education programme.
"Ginger's best friend and soul-sibling Kimchi and another dog T-Bone will continue what Ginger started, especially now that a lot are suffering from mental issues brought about by the pandemic," they said.
A Guide Dog for a Blind Dog
In this video, Ginger and Kimchi can be seen taking a stroll at Gateway Mall in the Philippines. They navigate through the crowds, and later wait patiently for their daddy while he buys something from the supermarket. This video is part 1 of another upload "Guide Dog for a Blind Dog Ginger and Soul-Sibling Kimchi Wait Patiently Outside a Supermarket Until Daddy Finishes Shopping". Ginger and Kimchi are well known at that supermarket and shopping mall in which they often visit. The employees know that they won't go anywhere without their daddy. The two are in no danger as the security guard always keeps an eye on them while daddy shops, in the off-chance that someone would try to take them away. At most, they're only made to wait a few minutes.
Ginger and Kimchi, a lovable doggie duo, went massively viral in 2018. Their videos and inspiring story were shared by People Magazine, Daily Mail, Lad Bible, and Good Morning America, among countless other media and entertainment agencies, and received millions of views, with the Daily Mail Facebook post receiving over 13M views. What made the 2 doggos unique was that Ginger, a senior Golden Retriever mix, served as the guide dog to Kimchi, a blind Cocker Spaniel who was rescued from the streets in the Philippines in 2012. A Guide Dog for a Blind Dog! At the time of his rescue, Kimchi was thin, mangy, with flea-infested matted fur. He was so weak, and almost completely blind. He was adopted by Eric and Thea, because their dog at that time, Ginger, chose him. She growled at all the other dogs at the shelter, save for Kimchi. They soon became best friends and in 2015, when Kimchi went totally blind, Ginger became his guide when they go out. The duo often visit schools, companies, government agencies, along with clinics and hospitals to provide comfort, as part of Animal Assisted Interventions and Humane Education program. This particular video, in its original form was thought to have been lost, along with many of Ginger and Kimchi's videos and photos. The phone in which it was recorded was lost/misplaced in early 2019. Which is why only a few of their videos were shared in 2018. It was only when Eric and Thea were cleaning out their apartment in early November 2021, prior to moving, that the phone miraculously resurfaced. It was a big relief that the contents of the phone were still intact. Thea and Eric thought that Ginger and Kimchi's videos would provide encouragement to a world devastated by the pandemic, just as their videos did in 2018. They wanted to share their videos with the world once more, and make millions happy.
Unfortunately, Ginger, the guide dog, passed away on Jan 2019, when she suffered what appears to have been a heart attack, while the duo, along with T-Bone, another dog owned by Eric and Thea, were at a high school in the Philippines. The 3 were there to provide happiness and comfort to the students, as part of an Animal Assisted Interventions and Humane Education Program. Prior to her sudden death, Ginger was fine. In fact, she was so happy on the day of the school visit, seemingly aware that she and her doggie "siblings" were going somewhere special. She was beside herself with joy inside the car, often sticking her head out of the window, like many dogs do.
In memory of Ginger, Eric and Thea founded Ginger and Kimchi's Pet Therapy: FURst Love is PAWever in 2019. They wanted to continue to provide comfort, happiness, and inspiration to those who need it, as well as help educate people on Responsible Pet Parenthood. This endeavour would also help provide a source of funds to the Animal Welfare Organization they volunteered for, as well as a way to provide a better life for the rescued cats and dogs that Thea and Eric care for. Through this Humane Education and Animal Assisted Interventions Program, Ginger's legacy would live on.
