Wildlife rescue! Saving a Terrapin in South Africa

When I received a message to say there was a turtle on the beach that needed help, I rushed to it, as part of my volunteering with a local marine animal rescue team. You can imagine my surprise when I found the 'turtle' and it turned out to be a marsh terrapin... a freshwater species not found near this beach. It must have washed down one of the rivers into a storm drain pipe and out to sea, during our recent storms. When it finally made its way onto dry land, some well meaning bystanders kept trying to 'return' it to sea, where it would not have survived. I took it to the local wildlife vet who treated it, and the terrapin is now safely recovering at a nearby wildlife reserve.
