Rescue effort to save herd of elephants trapped in pond

A group of elephants, including calves, were trapped in a muddy pond in northeastern India's Assam state on December 2 until rescue by forest officials.

The incident took place in Lakhipur, located in the Goalpara district. Footage shows the herd struggling to stay afloat inside the pond. They swim on the surface of the muddy water while a crowd of curious onlookers gathers at a safe distance.

Five wild elephants, including a calf, out on a food-hunt, slipped inside the pond on Wednesday night, following which they had a lucky escape the following morning.

Later forest officials reach the spot, equipped with an earthmover were able to dig a ramp allowing the .
