Trafalgar Square's much-mocked Christmas tree lights up

The lights on the giant Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square in central London were switched on last night (December 2).

The lighting of the Christmas tree has been a tradition in Trafalgar Square since 1947 when the first Norwegian spruce was lowered into place as a token of thanks from the Norwegian people for the support Britain gave to the country after they suffered Nazi occupation during the Second World War.

This year's tree has been mocked on social media for looking "bare", "sad" and "half-dead".
