It’s all too easy to fall off the wagon with health and fitness during the busy festive period, but a personal trainer has revealed the best way to keep on track – while still enjoying an indulgence or two.

Keith McNiven, 38, from London, says it is all about making smarter choices to avoid writing off December completely – and insists it is possible to go to parties and still lose weight, build muscle and lead a balanced lifestyle.

The fitness buff, who founded personal training company Right Path Fitness, advises his clients with five top tips to keep them on track to meet their goals throughout the festive period – with no need to ditch the office Christmas bash.

FUEL UP

Lining the stomach before a big night on the town is crucial, according to Keith, but don’t be tempted to stop at a simple piece of toast.

“Try to have a balanced meal – include a protein-rich source like chicken, turkey or salmon,” Keith told Jam Press.

“This will help you stay fuller for longer and will stop you from reaching for any festive snacks.”

DRINK SMART

For the fitness guru, this doesn’t mean skipping alcoholic beverages or festive drinks, and he still encourages his clients to enjoy a tipple if they fancy it – but to be health-conscious when it comes to what they consume.

Keith said: “Avoid alcoholic drinks with high levels of congeners like whisky and tequila, and opt instead for spirits like vodka and gin.

“It’s also a good idea to avoid drinks with added sugars. Choose sugar-free mixers to reduce your calorie intake.”

PLANNING IS EVERYTHING

While it is important to keep up with your workout regimen, Keith recommends planning ahead to ensure you don’t get lumped with anything strenuous the night after drinking.

Schedule in your exercise around any events, using the day of the event to get your sweat on and get your body feeling great.

Keith said: “I wouldn’t recommend a strenuous workout with a hangover – your body needs some time to recover.

“The day after a big night you should go for a walk or something equally less strenuous, and then you’ll be ready the following day to go full steam ahead.”

AVOID THE BURGER VAN

The drunken munchies are a temptation few of us can pass up, but with the right amount of forward-thinking, there’s no need to hit up the burger van.

Keith instead suggests preparing a tasty, nutritious snack to come home to at the end of the night, or for the following day.

He said: “I would definitely avoid the drunken munchies and the next day eating lots of unhealthy foods – this is the mistake a lot of people make.

“I would suggest preparing some healthy tasty food at home pop in in your fridge – homemade burgers are a great choice.”

HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION

Keith’s final tip is an oldie but a goodie – stay hydrated by guzzling plenty of water.

While it is tempting to reach for a bottle of chilled Coca Cola after a night out, h20 is the only sure-fire drink that will keep us well hydrated and full-up.

Keith also recommends drinking plenty of water during the night – particularly if you are dancing.

This ensures you won’t try to rehydrate with sugary, alcoholic drinks, and helps to avoid a hangover.

Keith added: “Try to have a few glasses of water throughout the night – you’ll thank yourself the following day!”
