Following a major collapse of a famous cliff in Devon on Tuesday, more rock collapsed just minutes later, closing off the beach from the town of Budleigh Salterton.

Following a major collapse of the part of the western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site more rock closes off the beach from the town of Budleigh Salterton. The Jurassic Coast is one of the most popular destinations in Britain, drawing visitors from all over the world. This section sits close to the historic town of Budleigh Salterton famous for its links with Sir Walter Raleigh, the Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais and popular as an unspoilt seaside resort. The area is also the point where the Lower Otter Estuary meets the sea. The estuary, along with the cliffs of Otterton Point, is a nationally important site for biodiversity and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It contains a range of intertidal habitats including saltmarsh and tidal creeks and is the site of the Lower Otter Restoration Project. This project, working with local people and partner organisations on the downstream part of the River Otter, its estuary, and its immediate surroundings, started in 2021 to protect and enhance the tidal area for future generations in the face of a rapidly changing climate. The River Otter is home to a rapidly expanding population of European Beavers.
