A Vietnamese doctor was surprised recently to discover 'mushrooms' growing in a man's ears.

The patient came to the doctor in Hai Phong on December 8 complaining of painful and smelly ears.

On examination with an endoscope, the doctor found the 1-centimetre fungus deep in the man's auditory canal.

The patient said he's recently taken up swimming and had allowed water into his ears which could have caused the fungal growth.

A fungal ear infection develops when fungi grow inside a person's ear canal.

The condition, technically known as otomycosis, can be caused by various species of fungus and is fairly common.

According to the doctor, the man came to his clinic and said that his ear was very itchy and there was a bad smell coming from his ear.
The doctor checked and was surprised to see mushrooms growing in the man's ear. Mushrooms filled his ear canal.
The doctor quickly removed the mushrooms from the man's ear. There was a mushroom that was nearly 1cm in size and was deeply ingrained in the man's ear canal, causing serious damage.
The man said he had recently learned to swim and got water in his ear canal. This could be the cause of the fungus growing in his ear.
The doctor advised him to use earplugs when practicing swimming to prevent water from getting into his ears and causing damage.
The man's ear was severely damaged. It will take a long time to recover. The doctor said.
