A pillar of Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung high speed rail project collapsed in an accident on Thursday 9 December.

The vast pillar crushed one of the excavators below it. Fortunately no-one was injured in the incident.

Filmer Ulfa Musriadi was at the scene as he had been invited there by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Indonesian Railways Company -- the country's public train operator) in order to film TV coverage.

Five excavator units are seen trying around the giant pillar, which is in the process of being taken down. The base of the pillar has been cut away to facilitate the demolition process.

The five excavators were in position to hold the pillar and ensure it collapsed in a controlled direction, but suddenly the pillar collapsed unexpectedly and crushed one of the excavators.

After the video went viral on social media, PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), which is responsible for the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung rail project spoke to media.

President Director Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi was furious and reprimanded contractors who were judged to have been negligent in their work. According to him, there were errors made in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the dismantling of the pillar.

"PT KCIC does not tolerate any construction faults that exceed the required tolerance," he said in comments reported on Thursday 9 December

Initially, said Dwiyana, the quality team of PT KCIC and the CDJO supervision consultant found a shift in the alignment of the pillar and instructed the contractor to rework and dismantle it, to be rebuilt according to the technical specifications that were originally set.

The Engineering SOP related to dismantling the pillar for rework, he continued, had also been set out, including around construction safety. However, based on the results of the investigation conducted by KCIC, it was found the contractor violated the SOP, resulting in the accident.
