A collection of Barrel Jellyfish arrive to feed on the plankton off the coast of Devon UK in the summer. The footage was taken from a kayak 2 miles off the coast of Budleigh Salterton in August after seeing their ghostly shapes beneath the waves. Their underwater ballet lasted for over an hour and comprised as many as 30 jellyfish.
The Rhizostoma plumo (barrel jellyfish) is the UK's largest jellyfish growing up to 1 metre in diameter and weighing up to 35kg. This earns them the alternative name Dustbin-lid Jellyfish. Numbers are thought to be growing due to the decline of many of their natural predators including leatherback turtles, possibly caused by plastic waste and other human pollution in the ocean. Despite their size their sting is not harmful to humans
