Far-right anti-vax demonstration attracts hundreds in Berlin

The youth wing of Germany's far-right AfD party organised a so-called vaccine strike against COVID measures on Saturday (December 11).

Despite being one of Germany's largest political parties, only 350 protestors attended the demonstration by the Junge Alternative youth wing. The group chanted slogans such as "Scholz out" (in reference to new Chancellor Olaf Scholz) and "Wir sind das Volk" (We are the people), a slogan associated with far-right group PEGIDA.

Along the route, counter-demonstrations were held by left and far-left groups. The two sides exchanged insults, however police successfully kept them separate. In one instance, police shoved a small group of left-wing protestors down a side street.

The Junge Alternative attracts extremist and sometimes violent youth. On December 4, two young men connected with the youth group attacked journalists at a separate anti-vax event. The organisation is monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
