Two shooting stars were filmed streaking across the night sky in Switzerland in the early hours of Saturday 12 December.

The Geminids, or Geminid meteor shower, is going to peak on December 13-14, with hundreds of meteors expected to streak across the sky. But some are already arriving.

Weather conditions permitting, the best view (in Europe) will be a few hours before dawn on Tuesday morning, 14 December, because the peak is forecast to be centred around 07:00 UT and moonlight will be waning then.

The Geminid meteor shower is usually the best such shower of the year, even better than the popular August Perseids, but many people don't know it because it is either affected by cloudy weather or very cold.

The best will be in the few hours before dawn on tuesday morning 14 december, because the peak is forecast to be centered around 07:00UT . It is a broad peak so meteors can be seen for many many hours, practically all night. But you can see more of them when closer to the peak, and also when the radiant in Gemini is highest in the sky... and most of all, when there is no moonlight ! The moon will be bright, gibbous waxing phase just a few days before full moon, so the evening sky will be brighter... therefor it is best to wait for the few darkest hours between moonset and dawn twilight, tuesday morning. Of course you'll cloudless skies, too. And you can still see some meteors even with the moonlight in evening, but simply less, only the brighter ones. The darker the sky, the better. If you have time try also to watch monday morning, monday evening, most importantly tuesday morning but why not also the following night, weather permitting. The Geminid meteor shower is usually the best of the year, even better than the popular august Perseids, but many people don't know it because it is either bad weather, or if it is clear skies then it is often very very cold. If you are in the far northern latitudes of Canada, Alaska, Sibiria, Scandinaiva , Iceland or southern Greenland then you might even see northern lights with hundreds of shooting stars. On top of that, the Geminid meteor shower is not the only active these nights, there are several other meteor showers that produce a few meteors per hour only but add to the overall show.
