Engineers began cliff stabilisation work for a controversial seafront development in Newquay, Cornwall, on Thursday 9 December.

Workers 30m (100 feet) up the cliff were seen drilling into it as part of efforts to securely pin the slate cliff.

It is part of the redevelopment of the Trebarwith Hotel site on the cliff edge at Great Western Beach in Newquay, and is very controversial in the area.

The work has begun after Newquay Council's objections to the project were overruled by County planning officers.
