CCTV captured the moment a man was caught as he attempted to steal items of clothing from a neighbourhood in Indonesia for a third day.

The thief was apprehended by angry local residents in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra province, on 3 December, having been filmed taking items on 2 and 1 December.

Over the course of several days he had stolen several items, including a pair of shoes and panties hanging out to dry. But residents lay in wait for him on the third day and made sure he did not get away.

One victim of his theft, Marwel, said the thief was suspected of wearing a motorbike ride-hailing and delivery app's uniform and helmet so he would not be suspected.

“The thief came in the early hours of the morning, parked his vehicle in the driveway of the alley, then walked to the house which was not fenced. The first day he stole shoes on the shelf, the next day he stole the neighbour's underwear on the clothesline,” Marwel said.

“The next day we stayed up late to wait for the thief to come. We surrounded him and then handed him over to the police,” Marwel added.

According to residents, when he was arrested, the thief said he was picking up an online delivery order, which residents couldn't believe as it was 4am.

The police found two knives and several pieces of women's underwear in the storage space under the seat of his motorbike. The suspect admitted he still had the stolen shoes at home.

The perpetrator has been threatened with a light punishment of three days in jail as the stolen goods are worth less than 2.5 million rupiah (174 US dollars).
