Two testosterone-fuelled male elephants were seen fighting for dominance in eastern Thailand.

Video shows the aggressive bulls butting heads in the Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary in Chanthaburi province on November 28.

The two jumbos were locked in a fierce fight for dominance as they battled for the attention of female elephants in the sanctuary.

Officer of the Wildlife Sanctuary Arkhom Pongsuwan captured the terrifying moment while he was on patrol.

He said: ‘Both the elephants looked violent. I believe they are fighting for herd dominance as it is mating season. They both looked very ready to fight for the female elephants.’

Male elephants or bulls periodically enter a state called ‘musth’ which can last several months. A bull in musth experiences increased testosterone production and aggressive behaviour, resulting in clashes between adult males.

They also produce a scene that attracts females.

Thailand has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild but there is often conflict when they come into contact with humans on roads and in villages. A similar number of elephants are kept captive where they work in zoos and are hired out for religious festivals and weddings.
