The Study on Population and Habitat Viability Assessment of Orang Utans (2016) projects that only 38% of the orangutan population in Indonesia will survive in the next 100-500 years. The biggest threat to the great apes is habitat loss due to land conversion and forest fires. This threat also needs to be anticipated early on.
The existence of Tanjung Puting National Park is very important for the conservation of the Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) which is an endangered species. Still based on Population and Habitat Viability Assessment data, the population of Bornean orangutans is around 57,350 individuals spread across various regions. Tanjung Puting is home to the subspecies Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii with a population of about 5,000 individuals.
