Clathrus ruber (Red Cage Stinkhorn) erupting from their eggs time lapse

Buy video

A Clathrus ruber egg (Red Cage Stinkhorn fungus) erupting over a 48hr period.

Like something from a sci-fi movie this fungus dramatically erupts from it's egg forming a large red cage filled with a brown slime containing their spores and relies on flies for it's distribution. The rotten flesh smell of the slime attracts flies who get coated in the spore containing slime and carry it away to germinate into a new crop of fungi next year. This species is native of Australia and NZ but has been introduced to the UK where the can be found in isolated locations in the south.
