Indonesia's Mount Semeru volcano began spewing smoke again on Sunday, weeks after a deadly eruption earlier this month.

The footage from December 19 shows a cloud of smoke hanging above the peak of the highest volcano on Java island and there are fears of an avalanche of lava and searing gas.

Authorities on Saturday raised the alert level, warning that Mount Semeru could blow up again after a sudden eruption earlier in December left 48 people dead.

Mount Semeru re-launched hot cloud avalanches (APG) this Sunday (12/19/2021) this morning.

This was confirmed by the Volcanology Mitigation Coordinator of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Kristianto.

"The Semeru Eruption in the form of Fallen Hot Clouds, on December 19, 2021 at 05:31 WIB," said Kristianto to Kompas.com, Sunday (12/19/2021).

This morning's eruption was also recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 720 seconds.

Kristianto explained, the hot cloud gliding starlings as far as 3 kilometers from the middle of the lava tongue or 1,500 meters from the peak and leads to Besuk Kobokan.

"Still the same direction to Besuk Kobokan," he explained.
