Workers restore a Byzantine church mosaic on the floor of a church in Khan Younis, Gaza

The Iwan Center for Cultural Heritage at the Islamic University, has begun a project to restore the floor of a Byzantine church in the Gaza Strip.

The project is in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Municipality of Abasan Al-Kabira.

Video shot on Monday 20 December shows workers at the Byzantine church in Khan Younis, which dates back to 606 AD.

The mosaic contains drawings of birds, plant leaves, inscriptions, and decorations.

The work on the project started with cleaning the perimeter of the mosaic floor, while the construction of the mud wall surrounding the floor continues. This project is funded by the Dutch Foundation, the Prince Claus Fund.

The first phase was completed through the process of restoring the floor, knowing that work on the project will be completed by the end of next January 2022.

Project Manager Ayman Hassouna spoke about the work, to the filmer.
