Protesters converged on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) building over plans to build a new power plant next to villages.

Demonstrators were seen holding up signs ‘#savenabon’ on December 21 to rally against the construction of the biomass power plant by Absolute Clean Energy Public Company Limited (ACE) in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, southern Thailand.

The construction of the 50-megawatt power plant is believed to be in an improper location where its operation after completion would negatively impact the local community.

Locals believe that the pollution produced by the power plant would damage their health. The Nabon power plant also requires a large amount of water for power generation, consumes tons of fuel every year and risks calamity on local farmers’ crops.

SaveNabon protesters had demonstrated outside the Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) headquarters in July. King Vajiralongkorn is a major shareholder in SCB, while the same bank also has stakes in ACE.

Speaking in the video, one of the protesters claimed those who sold their land were unaware it was to be made into a power plant.
