Footage shows bombs exploding in the Gaza Strip late on Saturday evening January 1 as Israel launched retaliatory airstrikes against Hamas. The missiles struck a military site in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the strip.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out the bombing after two rockets fired from Gaza landed off the Tel Aviv coast on Saturday morning.

They said in a statement: ‘Fighter jets and helicopters attacked a series of targets in a rocket production facility belonging to the Hamas terror group.’

Israeli Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi reportedly held an assessment session with the security and intelligence services, to discuss ways to respond to the two missiles that landed off the Mediterranean coast of Gush Dan in Greater Tel Aviv.

Local media reported that Israeli tanks also attacked Hamas military posts near Gaza’s border with Israel.

Hamas supporters claimed the initial missile launch was ‘not intentional’ and happened due to ‘rainy weather conditions and as a result of a technical malfunction’.
